THEY WAS THIS BIG OLE TWO-STORY FRAME HOUSE THAT HAD PILINâS ANâ A dock stretched out in front of it âlongside the water. Dock had posts ever five-six feet with coal oil lanterns hung, all burninâ a bright yellow. In back of these ever single window of the house was lit up too. Anâ âround the outside, in amongst the trees anâ Spanish moss, was dozens of them liâl colored paper lanterns like I seen one time in Denver when I went to a Chinese eatinâ place.
I mean it couldnât of been much brighter if it had been downtown Jacksonville at noonâthough just now I figured it were cominâ on to midnight. I could hear the sound of a pi-anna inside there too, playinâ a lively tune of the kind Iâd heard somebody call ragtime.
Weâd come up on that big stretch of water unawares, anâ Cameron started backinâ up from it right quick. Soon as I could get myself over my gawkinâ I pitched in to help him. Out in the open with all that light from the house anâ the moon we was feelinâ like a liâl fly settinâ down on a white sheet under a window.
We got ourselves back into the shadows of the trees anâ set ourselves to thinkinâ anâ talkinâ âbout what weâd found.
âNot exactly what Iâd have expected to see,â Cameron saidâ âout here miles from the closest city or town.â
I nodded, agreeinâ with him but not havinâ nothinâ to say. âTâwerenât what Iâd of expected to see âmost any place a feller could name.
âIâve an idea thatâs the bawdy house we heard those men back there talking about. I canât imagine what else it would be, so far from civilization and doing business at this hour.â
âI reckon maybe. But if it is they sure ainât hidinâ none of their lights underneath a bushel.â
âIt pays to advertise. I donât imagine itâs any secret in this area. The sheriff probably knows all about it. He either doesnât care what happens away from the homes of respectable citizens, or he may be getting paid to look the other way. He could even be a customer!â
âMakes sense I guess, when you âsplain it that way.â I was quiet for a few seconds, bendinâ over to peer past the trees at all the lights of that liâl backwoods Babylon. âWhat you figure to do? If theyâs any plumers inside there we mightâs well just leave âem to their pleasures anâ go on back to the horses. We sure ainât goinâ to sneak up on nobody in such a place.â
âNo â¦â
There was somethinâ âbout the way he said that caused me to glance back over my shoulder. Doggone if the gent werenât grinninâ!
âWeâll just go over there to the landing, climb out of this boat, and walk right in the front door!â
Well, we done it. Paddled acrost that stretch of water bold as you please anâ found us a rope hanginâ from a pilinâ at the far end of the dock.
